Last Thursday, I had a chance to join a workshop about The International Student Job Search, with presentation of Dan Beaudry, the author of the book "Power Ties: The International Student Job Search", most recently the Campus Recruiting Manager for Monster.com where he constructed and managed the company’s first formal university recruiting program. This workshop was open to all NU students to provide strategies for international students to approach the U.S. job search. There are many interesting information that I learned from this session such as why some employers deny to sponsor the H-1B Visa but finally do, what are the new strategies to approach an employer, would a perfect resume still be a good way? etc.
According to what Dan Beaudry said, spending time filling in an online application profile should no longer be a way. That will just facilitate the employers to screen through your profile quickly and then ignore it. What he suggested was writing emails and ask for an information interview with the employer. This will make you become more active and will show more enthusiasm for the job. However, we could have an exception.
There is one special thing about making application online that I feel very proud and interested. If you are students at Northwestern where we have an internal jobs site called Career Cat, do not hesitate to post your profile on!! Why is this difference? Because here is where the employers will come to look for the candidates. You will not be one of the millions out there approaching them. Make a good profile, and they will approach you! This is true.
I talked to an alumni now working for Neilsen. He said that the career site of the school used to be his best friend to look for jobs and thanks to that he has his job now at Neilsen. What a nice resource!! And let me tell you this, all of these nice things are for you, my MSC friends! Don't forget to take advantage of them if you are looking for a job! :)
Good luck my friends!!
