The Economics of Commuications?

Life is full of challenges and they keep us focused, driven and involved...some would say without challenges why even bother? The excitement is gone; the reality is grey and the outcome of our output foreseen as a constant - Ergo challenges are good for our livelihood, reality and foreseeable futures right?
Well, it seems I am about to put this thesis to the test and the challenge is shaping up to be my elective for this quarter: Communication strategy and competitive advantage, an intense look at strategy in the economic sense and gaining a competitive advantage in the communications arena - or as I like to call it, the sum of all my fears.

Value/cost calculation???

Built upon an economics framework, the proposition that this highly interesting yet purely unchartered territory presents to the always literary and communications driven student in me, is refreshing to say the least. I was the kid that never, ever sacrificed my love for words for the 'brain saving' numbers game; I studied History, English Literature, Phonetics and Phonology, Philosophy, even Divinity to escape economics...of all kinds and scales. So picture me puzzled when the opening statement is a value/cost calculation???

The course promises to be a mind opener about canvassing the background workings manifested in the decisions corporate entities make when looking at the market and their perceived position in and portion of its sphere, which in turn determines decisions regarding products made and services offered to their customers.
Debra Aron, who teaches this course, is an economist (a real one! Gulp!) and she understandingly encouraged us (economics haters) to open our minds and embrace a different way of thinking by stepping out of our comfort zones to broaden our knowledge sphere with this course. Well,  I'm thinking that I'm challenged all right, plus it really is about time I joined the rest of the world onboard the economics train since it’s unavoidable for my future communications career right? Check back in tosee how that goes.
